Thunder Mesa Studio is Moving! | Workbench Wednesday
Просмотров 7 тыс.День назад
Major news! Thunder Mesa Studio will be moving to a new location over the next few weeks. I didn't want to do it, but there really isn't much choice. Now I'm getting ready to pack up everything - including the Thunder Mesa layout - and move it all down the hill out of Jerome. I've had a great run in this historic old mining town, but it's time to move on ro somewhat bigger and (hopefully) bette...
Modeling a Tunnel | Goldfield & Calico
Просмотров 8 тыс.14 дней назад
Let's build a tunnel! In this installment of the On30 Goldfield & Calico project, I model a tunnel that goes through the backdrop to connect the "on-stage" parts of the layout to the backstage staging yard. First, I paint and detail the track, then it's time to build a square-set timber tunnel portal and model the rocky interior and exterior of the tunnel itself. Track finishing, wood construct...
Installing a Backdrop | Goldfield & Calico
Просмотров 6 тыс.28 дней назад
In this installment of the On30 Goldfield & Calico project, I repurpose and reinstall a large section of backdrop from the old Thunder Mesa layout. After cutting it down to size, the backdrop is securely mounted on the new layout and then some portions are repainted to match the new scenes. There's a little, carpentry, a little ingenuity, and a little backdrop painting in this video! Thanks for...

Ride the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad! | Railroad Adventures

This week I took a little break from working on model railroads to get out there and ride the real thing! The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad should be near the top of any narrow gauge railway fan's bucket list. This spectacular rail line is a preserved 64 mile long remnant of the 3' gauge Denver & Rio Grande Western. It crosses and recrosses the Colorado and New Mexico border 11 times as it t...
Building New Benchwork | Thunder Mesa Reimagined

It's time to get out the old carpentry tools and build some benchwork! Join me as I build a new stand and some bi-level box frame benchwork for the next section of Thunder Mesa Reimagined - the redesign and rebuild of my On30 Thunder Mesa Mining Company layout. Calculating Scale | Workbench Wednesday

It's Q&A time at the workbench, and this week I'm answering a question about calculating scale. Figuring out the scale of a miniature when it's not readily apparent might be a little trickier than you think. It requires a little educated guesswork, a few assumptions, and a smattering of math! Just because the layout's torn apart doesn't mean I can't build some structures for it! It's time to build some new scenery for the Thunder Mesa layout! I already ordered the nail polish rack for my paint bottles. What a great idea 💡. I do have to wait two days for delivery. WOW! Am I spoiled by Amazon! Love it. Thank you for the gracious manner in which you explained some followers’ worries about the use of your new space. Even though I don’t feel that you need to explain such issues, it’s only people who feel personally invested in your endeavor who bring up such concerns. They worry about you because they care. You let all of us in on the journey of moving your studio. I appreciate your explanations!

Looked and sounded as you did there in the end of the video. Just love follow this move to new location. No matter what it´s one bolt at the time until it´s done and you do great work at it. Good luck with the move Dave . Better you than me. Everything looks fine to me other than that small aircon unit. Nothing preventing you from moving it so it vents to the outside as it should, i.e. in a window or above the entry door, or just put it into deep storage. It would also make a reasonable anchor if you have a small boat.

Dear Dave, must say I love the moving stuff! Cool to hear how you addressed the different comments you received. Especially the one on the Jerome studio’s upkeep. Do remember you once or twice showed those moving curtains! Anyhow, just as with your builds it’s obvious you have a plan, and when a man has a plan, it simply is going to work! Looking forward to seeing the train room move. Cheerio

Thanks for the update. I had some of the concerns you addressed and it all makes sense now. I look forward to your next report. By the way we had a big thunder storm this afternoon that delayed the returning trains by about an hour and a half. We have a lot of cleanup after the hail cleaned the leafs from the trees and made Swiss cheese out of the green house. We will keep moving forward. Thanks for all you do.

You keep doing you. I gain so much inspiration from seeing how well thought out your model railway journey is. As you explain in your video you did a lot of thinking and homework before you picked this new space. As much as I enjoy and marvel at your wonderful models, what I truly value is how you explain the thinking, planning and theory that goes on before the magic starts. Often the why of something model related isn't shown and talked about as is the how. Remember, lift carefully, you only have one back.

Personal question that I have no business asking, do you make a living off of model railroading? I’ve always assumed you paid the bills by selling your artwork, but I don’t see a space for that endeavor in the new shop. Also, will you eventually have “open studio” nights like you did in the previous place? Best wishes going forward!

That AC unit is known as the "Boss AC". When the boss feels things are going too slow, he says "Boys, your molasses tempo is making me a might hot under the collar, I'm going to retire to my office and turn on the AC until you get caught up." It doesn't work very well for a sole proprietor though.

A comment and a question. I like the way you build smaller layouts for display or operation by one person. I’ve seen huge layouts and you need several people to operate and even maintain them. And do you attend any of the Narrow Gauge Conventions?

Nice workshop Dave... Appreciate you acknowledging the heat concerns that I and others have made. From your explanation, all should be well for you in the new space. It's sounds like you'll be more than happy in the new location, best wishes to you in the new space! That "Jeep" crate is pretty darn slick!! Is that something you can buy on its own, or do you have to purchase "Jeep" accessories to get them? I have a couple of machine tools that would fit great in a few of those... Looking at a major house move in a few years, and a few of those crates would be great.

While I'm looking forward to seeing you back to modelling, I also enjoy seeing how folks plan out their layout areas from the start. And of course for you, this is a "clean" slate. An early drawing, even if only a rough copy will help folks understand more what you have in mind. Even though no doubt it will change as you move forward. Keep up the good work, and take care. I've moved 13 times in my life. I Don't mind it. I have always thought of it as better than spring cleaning., and you get to start new. The "new" , place is usually better because you picked it out with something new in mind, so planning is fun and it gives me a chance to reorganize.

I’m so happy i found this video, i’m doing a layout set in the tv show called outlander, the locomotives and a few of the industries and destenations are named after characters from the show, i’m putting cow and horse heads on my rolling stock and adding faces to the locomotives, animals such as horses, deer, cows, rabbits, birds, squirils and mice live near and wrun the railway in this world, all my engines are steamies because i love steam locomotives and because i say so, i’m building everything from scratch because i’m tired of trains being too pricy and i want to, also it’s my railway and i do what i want to, drive what i want to, i’m even doing stories centered arround the railway’s operations and characters, ican’t stand gatekeeping in the hobby, doesit matter how prototypical your layout is? No it doesn’t it’s just for fun
